Description
The 120mm heavy mortar was a Soviet‑designed weapon that became one of the most powerful infantry support systems of the Second World War. Introduced in the late 1930s, it combined relatively simple construction with formidable firepower, delivering high‑explosive shells capable of destroying fortified positions, bunkers, and concentrations of enemy troops.
Its range of over six kilometres allowed it to strike targets well beyond the reach of lighter mortars. Polish forces aligned with the Soviet Union, particularly the Polish People’s Army formed in 1943, were equipped with the 120mm mortar as part of their standard artillery complement. It played a crucial role in battles across Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and eventually Germany, providing devastating indirect fire in support of infantry assaults.
Although heavy and requiring a larger crew to operate, the mortar’s destructive capability made it a valued weapon.
