152mm ML-20 heavy howitzer (Soviet)

Description

The Soviet 152mm ML-20 was one of the most versatile and powerful artillery pieces of the Second World War.

Introduced in 1937, the ML-20 combined the characteristics of a gun and a howitzer, giving it both long-range firepower and high-angle capability. Designed under F. F. Petrov at Plant No. 172, it weighed over 7 tonnes in combat configuration. The gun fired 152mm shells at a muzzle velocity of 655 m/s, with a maximum range of 17.2 kilometres, and a rate of fire of three to four rounds per minute.

The ML-20 was used extensively in the Winter War and the Great Patriotic War, proving effective against fortifications, infantry, and even heavy armour. Its adaptability led to its installation on self-propelled platforms such as the SU-152 and ISU-152, which earned the nickname “Zveroboy” (“beast killer”) for their ability to destroy German Tigers and Panthers. With nearly 7,000 units produced, the ML-20 remained in service for decades, influencing artillery design worldwide.
