Description

The French 27/31 81mm mortar was a powerful and versatile weapon that played a significant role in the Second World War. Designed by Edgar Brandt, the French engineer improved the British Stokes mortar by adding a bipod, a sight, and a recoil system to create the 27/31. The mortar could fire different types of shells, such as high-explosive, smoke, or illumination rounds, at a range of up to 3,000 meters.

As a solid medium mortar, it saw extensive use with the French Army and her allies. However, France’s enemies also made good use of it using captured or copied models. The mortar was easy to transport, set up, and operate by a crew of four or five men. It could provide accurate and effective fire support for infantry units in various terrains and situations. Many post-war mortars also show designs influenced by the 27/31.

The 27/31 was a remarkable example of innovation and adaptation in military technology. It demonstrated the importance of indirect fire weapons in modern warfare. It also showed the durability and reliability of the Brandt company, which continued to produce mortars for decades.
