Description
The 45mm M1937 (53‑K) was a Soviet light anti‑tank gun, widely produced from 1937 to 1943, with over 37,000 built. Known as the “Sorokapyatka” or “little forty‑five,” it was the Red Army’s standard anti‑tank weapon during the early years of the German–Soviet War.
Poland first received the gun in 1943, when Polish forces were re‑equipped in the Soviet Union after the country’s occupation. It became part of the arsenal of the Polish People’s Army, which fought alongside Soviet forces on the Eastern Front.
The gun was valued for its mobility, relatively high rate of fire, and ability to penetrate early and mid‑war German tanks, though it became less effective against heavier armour by 1944. Despite these limitations, it remained in Polish service through the war.
