Description

The Soviet 50mm light mortar, notably the RM-38 and its successors (RM-39, RM-40, and RM-41), was developed for company-level infantry support during the early stages of the Second World War. Introduced in 1938, the RM-38 was based on the British Stokes design but featured a complex gas-venting system to adjust range, which proved unreliable and hazardous.

It had fixed elevation settings and a limited effective range of around 800 metres. Subsequent models attempted to improve safety and usability, with the RM-41 being a significant redesign influenced by captured German mortars. Despite these efforts, the 50mm calibre was ultimately deemed too weak, offering limited explosive power—less than some hand grenades. By 1943, the Red Army phased out 50mm mortars in favour of more effective 82mm and 120mm systems.

Nevertheless, large numbers were produced and used early in the war, with captured examples even reissued by German and Finnish forces
