Army 3″ heavy AT gun (US)

Description

During World War II, the M5 3-inch anti-tank gun was developed by the U.S. Army to counter increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks. Introduced in 1943, it combined the T9 anti-aircraft gun barrel with components from the 105mm howitzer M2, creating a powerful but heavy towed weapon.

The M5 was issued to tank destroyer battalions, seeing combat in the Italian Campaign and the Western Front. It was effective against German armour, but its weight and mobility issues made it difficult to reposition quickly in battle. The gun fired 76.2mm armour-piercing rounds at a muzzle velocity of 792 m/s (2,600 ft/s), giving it strong penetration capabilities. However, logistical challenges and the preference for self-propelled tank destroyers led to its gradual removal from frontline service by 1945.

Despite its limitations, the M5 played a role in key battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, where towed tank destroyer battalions suffered heavy losses. By the war’s end, most units had transitioned to self-propelled alternatives, such as the M10 tank destroyer.
