Description
During World War II, the M2 60mm mortar was a crucial light infantry support weapon used by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Designed as a smoothbore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon, it provided troops with portable indirect fire capability, bridging the gap between hand grenades and heavier mortars.
The M2 mortar was based on a French design by Edgar Brandt, adapted for American use in the late 1930s. It was officially adopted in 1940 and saw extensive service throughout the war. The weapon consisted of a barrel, bipod, and baseplate, allowing for quick deployment and adjustment. It fired high-explosive, smoke, and illumination rounds, making it versatile in both offensive and defensive operations.
U.S. infantry units used the M2 mortar in Europe and the Pacific, providing suppressive fire, disrupting enemy positions, and supporting assaults. It was particularly effective in jungle warfare, where its portability allowed troops to engage hidden enemy forces. Despite its relatively short range of 1.8 km (1.1 miles), its high rate of fire (18 rounds per minute) made it a valuable asset.
The M2 mortar remained in service beyond WWII, influencing future mortar designs and tactics in modern warfare.
