Description

During World War II, the M1A1 75mm howitzer was a versatile artillery piece used by U.S. forces, particularly airborne and cavalry units. When mounted on the M3A3 carriage, it became a more mobile field howitzer, designed for rapid deployment and high-speed towing.

The M1A1 howitzer was originally developed in the 1920s, but mass production began in 1940. It fired high-explosive, smoke, and armour-piercing rounds, making it effective in both offensive and defensive roles. The M3A3 carriage featured a split-trail design, allowing for greater stability and traverse capabilities. Unlike earlier pack howitzer configurations, the M3A3 was not intended for pack transport but was optimised for mechanised units.

The M1A1 with M3A3 carriage saw action in North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific, where its mobility and firepower proved invaluable. It was used to support infantry advances, suppress enemy positions, and provide indirect fire support. Despite its relatively small calibre, it played a significant role in shaping battlefield tactics.
