Description
During World War II, the M1A2 37mm anti-aircraft gun was a key component of U.S. air defence, designed to counter low-flying enemy aircraft. Developed in the late 1930s, it was an improved version of the M1 37mm gun, featuring enhanced fire control and rate of fire.
The M1A2 was a high-velocity, long-recoil autocannon, capable of firing 120 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 792 m/s (2,598 ft/s). It was mounted on a four-wheeled trailer carriage, allowing for mobility and rapid deployment. The gun was often paired with M2 .50 calibre machine guns on half-tracks, creating the T28/M15 multiple gun motor carriage series.
The M1A2 was deployed in coastal defence batteries, alongside 90mm guns, to protect against enemy aircraft and motor torpedo boats. However, as the war progressed, it was gradually replaced by the 40mm Bofors gun, which offered superior firepower and effectiveness.
Despite its eventual replacement, the M1A2 played a crucial role in early U.S. air defence strategies.
