Description
During World War II, U.S. Army Rangers were elite light infantry units trained for specialised combat missions. The first Ranger battalion was formed in 1942, inspired by British Commandos, and was led by Major William O. Darby. By the war’s end, the Army had fielded seven Ranger battalions, conducting operations in North Africa, Italy, France, and the Pacific.
Ranger squads were highly trained in amphibious assaults, reconnaissance, and direct-action raids. They played a crucial role in the D-Day landings, scaling the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc to destroy German artillery threatening Omaha Beach. Rangers also fought in the Battle of Cisterna and spearheaded the Philippines campaign, rescuing prisoners from Japanese captivity.
Their training emphasised speed, endurance, and adaptability, making them effective in unconventional warfare. Despite their successes, Rangers faced heavy casualties, particularly in missions like the Battle of Cisterna, where they were outnumbered and surrounded.
The legacy of WWII Rangers influenced modern U.S. special operations forces, including the 75th Ranger Regiment, which continues their tradition of excellence. Their bravery and effectiveness in battle cemented their reputation as one of the most formidable fighting forces of the war.
