Description

During World War II, U.S. Army infantry squads formed the backbone of ground combat forces, playing a crucial role in engagements across Europe and the Pacific. Typically composed of 12 soldiers, a squad was led by a sergeant and divided into smaller fire teams, each equipped with rifles, automatic weapons, and grenades.

The standard squad was built around the M1 Garand rifle, a semi-automatic weapon that provided superior firepower compared to bolt-action rifles used by other nations. Additionally, squads often included a Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), which offered suppressive fire to support manoeuvres. Soldiers were trained in tactics such as bounding overwatch, flanking, and defensive positioning to maximise effectiveness in combat.

Infantry squads operated within larger platoons and companies, working alongside artillery, tanks, and air support to achieve strategic objectives. They fought in diverse environments, from the dense forests of the Ardennes to the volcanic terrain of Iwo Jima. Their adaptability and resilience were key to the success of U.S. military operations.
