Description

During World War II, U.S. Army snipers played a vital role on the battlefield, using precision marksmanship to eliminate key enemy targets, provide reconnaissance, and disrupt enemy operations. Unlike modern snipers, they often operated with less specialised equipment, relying on modified rifles such as the M1903 Springfield and M1 Garand fitted with telescopic sights. Their training focused on stealth, patience, and accuracy, making them invaluable assets in both defensive and offensive engagements.

U.S. snipers were particularly effective in urban combat, such as during the Battle of Aachen and the push through German cities in late 1944 and 1945. In the Pacific theatre, snipers helped counter the Japanese strategy of using concealed positions and ambush tactics, proving crucial in jungle warfare in places like Guadalcanal and Okinawa.

Despite their effectiveness, snipers faced challenges, including limited training programmes early in the war and the difficulty of operating in unpredictable environments. As the war progressed, the U.S. Army improved its sniper doctrine, learning from battlefield experience and refining tactics.
