Description
The AS.42 Sahariana was an Italian reconnaissance of World War II. Based on the chassis of the AB41, it was a fast and well liked vehicle, but it’s manufacture was complicated. Initially deploying in 1942, it saw action through to the end of the war and beyond. Â
Often seen as an Italian counterpart to the various cars and vehicles of the LRDG, the AS42 utilised a variety of weaponry including the 20mm Breda autocannon, a 20mm Solothurn AT rifle or even a Cannone 47/32. Secondary armaments were a number of the 8mm Breda machine gun. Unlike other unarmoured vehicles of the Italian army, the Sahariana was only used by raiding parties that opposed the LRDG. The low profile of the AS42 often gave it the element of surprise when hiding, and the additional water and fuel carried meant that it could engage in long range pursuits.
