Description
The BA‑64 was a Soviet light armoured car introduced in 1942, designed for reconnaissance and liaison duties. Built on the chassis of the GAZ‑64 jeep, it featured sloped armour and a single 7.62mm DT machine gun mounted in a small turret. Compact and relatively agile, it could operate on rough terrain, though its two‑man crew faced cramped conditions and limited visibility.
The Polish People’s Army, formed under Soviet command in 1943, received BA‑64s as part of its equipment. These vehicles were employed for scouting, communications, and escort tasks during campaigns in Belarus, Poland, and Germany. While lightly armed and vulnerable to heavier weapons, the BA‑64 provided valuable mobility and protection compared to unarmoured vehicles.
For Polish forces, it symbolised Soviet military support and offered a practical solution for reconnaissance in fast‑moving operations. Despite its limitations, the BA‑64 remained in service until the end of the war and into the post‑war years.
