Bedford QLR (British)

Description

The Bedford QLR was a British military signals vehicle used during the Second World War, serving as a mobile command post and communications hub.

Built on the versatile Bedford QL chassis, the QLR variant was specifically designed to support battlefield communications. It featured a box body equipped with radio equipment, cable drums, batteries, and workstations for signal operators. Powered by a 3.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 72 hp, the QLR had a 4×4 drivetrain, enabling it to traverse rough terrain and support frontline operations. Its payload capacity was approximately 3 tons, and it could carry a crew of up to 12 personnel.

Production of the QL series began in 1941, with the QLR introduced shortly thereafter. It was one of several specialised variants, including the QLD general service truck and QLB Bofors gun tractor. The QLR played a vital role in maintaining communications between units, often operating as a mobile headquarters or signals relay station. Its robust design and adaptability made it a reliable asset in various theatres of war, from Europe to North Africa.
