Description
After the Allies initially lagged behind the Germans in AT capability, the arrival of the 17 pdr levelled the field again. Using the new APDS round, it’s armour penetration exceeded even that of the feared L/71 88mm mounted in the Tiger II and Ferdinand/Elefant.
As well as being used as a towed AT platform, the 17pdr was also mounted on a number of vehicles including the Sherman Firefly, Challenger (A30), Archer, Achilles and Comet. It was also used in the prototype of the Churchill’s last upgrade – the Black Prince.
