Description
The Canadian CGT Field Artillery Tractor (FAT) was a specialized military vehicle used by British and Commonwealth forces during World War II. Manufactured by Chevrolet Canada, it was part of the Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck series, designed to tow 25-pounder field guns and 17-pounder anti-tank guns.
The CGT FAT featured a 4×4 drivetrain, ensuring mobility across rough terrain. It was powered by a Chevrolet 216 cubic inch, 6-cylinder petrol engine, producing 85 horsepower. The vehicle had a distinctive beetle-back body, accommodating a crew of six, including the driver and gun crew. A power winch was mounted above the rear axle to assist in maneuvering artillery pieces.
Used extensively in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific, the CGT FAT played a crucial role in artillery operations, ensuring rapid deployment and repositioning of field guns. After the war, many units remained in service or were repurposed for civilian use1.
