Description
The Canadian Ram tank was a cruiser tank developed during World War II, based on the American M3 Medium tank chassis. Designed and built by Montreal Locomotive Works, it was intended to equip Canadian armoured divisions but was ultimately used for training and support roles rather than frontline combat.
The Ram Mk I, introduced in 1941, featured a 2-pounder (40 mm) main gun and a cast hull, offering improved protection over its American counterpart. However, it was quickly replaced by the Ram Mk II, which was armed with a 6-pounder (57 mm) gun, later upgraded to a 75 mm gun. The Mk II saw extensive use in training and converted roles, including armoured personnel carriers (Ram Kangaroo) and command vehicles.
One notable variant was the Badger, a flamethrower tank based on the Ram Kangaroo. It replaced the bow machine gun with a flame projector, making it effective for clearing enemy fortifications. The Badger was deployed in Northwest Europe, particularly in Holland, during 1945.
Though the Ram tank never saw combat as a gun tank, its adaptability and reliability made it a valuable asset in Canadian military operations.
