Description
The Canadian Windsor Carrier was a late-war tracked vehicle developed as an improved variant of the Universal Carrier. Manufactured by Ford Canada, it was produced in a single batch of 5,000 units between 1944 and 1945 to meet the British Army’s ongoing demand for light tracked carriers.
Designed primarily for towing trailers and light anti-tank guns, the Windsor Carrier featured an extra bogie wheel at the rear, improving stability and reliability over earlier Universal Carrier models. It was powered by a 96-horsepower V8 engine, weighed approximately 5 tons, and measured 172 inches in length. The Windsor Carrier provided a stable platform for towing the 6-pounder anti-tank gun, while also offering greater crew comfort.
The Windsor Carrier was deployed to replace losses in frontline units, serving in multiple roles, including mortar platoon support and anti-tank crew transport. Its speed, manoeuvrability, and towing capability made it a valuable asset in battlefield logistics.
After the war, many Windsor Carriers remained in service, contributing to post-war military operations.
