Caterpillar D8 tractor (US)

Description

The Caterpillar D8 was a powerful tracked tractor used by American engineering and construction units throughout the Second World War. Commonly equipped with a bulldozer blade, it cleared vegetation, levelled ground and constructed roads, airfields and defensive positions. Its broad tracks allowed it to operate over mud, sand and broken terrain that stopped ordinary wheeled vehicles. In Pacific campaigns, D8 tractors helped transform captured islands into major military bases, often working soon after the fighting ended. They could also fill trenches, remove obstacles and assist vehicles stranded on beaches. Although unarmoured and vulnerable near the front, their strength and reliability made them indispensable engineering machines.
