Description
The Citroën-Kégresse P19 was a French half-track vehicle developed in the early 1930s, combining conventional front-wheel steering with a rear track system for enhanced off-road capability. Designed by Citroën in collaboration with Adolphe Kégresse, it was part of a broader effort to mechanise the French Army’s cavalry and infantry units. The P19 was based on the Citroën C6 chassis and featured a six-cylinder petrol engine, delivering around 42 horsepower and a top speed of approximately 46 km/h.
Primarily used as a personnel carrier, the P19 was issued to the Dragons Portés (motorised dragoons) and other mechanised units. It could transport up to seven troops and was occasionally fitted with mounts for light machine guns such as the FM 24/29. Its hybrid wheel-track configuration allowed it to traverse difficult terrain, including mud and snow, making it suitable for reconnaissance and liaison roles.
Variants included the P19B VLTT (Voiture de Liaison Tout Terrain), used for command and communication duties. Though lightly armoured and vulnerable to modern anti-tank weapons, the P19 served effectively until the fall of France in 1940. Its design influenced later half-track developments and remains a notable example of interwar military innovation.
