Crashed Kawasaki Ki-61 “Tony” (Japanese)

Description

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien, known to the Allies as Tony, was an unusually streamlined Japanese fighter powered by a liquid-cooled engine. Entering service in 1942, it possessed respectable speed, manoeuvrability and armament, while later versions carried heavier cannon. Its appearance led Allied observers initially to suspect that it was based upon a European design. Ki-61 fighters served over New Guinea, the Philippines, Japan and Okinawa, undertaking interception, escort and ground-attack missions. Engine reliability and production difficulties frequently limited availability, especially later in the war. Despite these problems, experienced pilots could use the aircraft effectively, and some examples were employed in deliberate ramming attacks.
