Daihatsu Landing craft (Japanese)

Description

The Daihatsu was a robust Japanese landing craft used extensively throughout the Pacific War. Its distinctive bow ramp allowed troops, vehicles, artillery and supplies to be unloaded directly onto beaches. Built with a shallow draught and diesel engine, it could operate close to shore and navigate rivers or sheltered waters. Daihatsu craft supported amphibious assaults, island garrisons and coastal transport across Japan’s widely dispersed empire. Although vulnerable to aircraft, artillery and naval gunfire, their simple construction and practical design made them extremely useful. Many were concealed beneath vegetation or camouflage netting between missions to protect them from Allied observation and attack.
