Description
The Fargo 1.5 ton truck was a medium-duty military vehicle used by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) during World War II. Based on Chrysler’s export-oriented Fargo brand, these trucks were built on Dodge chassis and adapted for tropical service in the Dutch East Indies. Featuring right-hand drive and open cabs, they were well-suited to the region’s infrastructure and climate.
In KNIL service, the Fargo trucks fulfilled a variety of roles including troop transport, logistics, and field support. Some were modified for combat support, notably as light utility vehicles with mounted weaponry. Field conversions included pintle-mounted machine guns—both MMG and HMG variants—as well as side-mounted guns and, in some cases, a forward-facing Bohler 47mm anti-tank gun. These adaptations allowed the truck to engage multiple targets simultaneously, offering mobile firepower in defensive operations.
The flatbed design enabled quick reconfiguration, and stabilising jacks were sometimes added to improve firing stability. Though not armoured, the Fargo’s reliability and adaptability made it a valuable asset during the Japanese invasion of 1942. Surviving vehicles were either captured, destroyed, or evacuated to Australia.
