Description
The Ford WOA1 Staff Car, originally developed in Britain from the 1938–39 Ford 22hp saloon, was adapted for military use during the Second World War. Though primarily a British vehicle, a limited number saw service with American forces, particularly in joint operations or under Lend-Lease arrangements.
The WOA1 featured a more powerful 32hp engine and was modified with cutaway wings to accommodate oversized sand tyres for desert conditions. Its simplified grille design echoed other Ford military models of the era. While not standard issue for the U.S. Army, the car was occasionally employed for liaison duties, staff transport, and administrative roles in theatres where British and American forces operated closely. Production ran from 1941 to 1944, with approximately 1,623 units built.
Its understated design and practical reliability made it a modest but effective asset in wartime logistics, especially in environments where British vehicles were more readily available than American counterparts.
