Description
The Humber FWD (Four-Wheel Drive) was a British military utility vehicle produced by Humber Limited between 1941 and 1945. Known as the Humber Heavy Utility or simply “the Box,” it was designed for off-road use and served in various roles including general service, wireless communication, and ambulance duties.
Powered by a 4.08-litre straight-six petrol engine, it delivered around 85 horsepower and featured a four-speed manual transmission with a two-speed transfer box for enhanced traction. Its 4×4 drivetrain and sturdy construction made it well-suited to rough terrain, and it was widely used across European and North African theatres.
The vehicle had a distinctive five-door body with ample interior space, making it ideal for staff transport and mobile command posts. The Humber FWD’s reliability and versatility earned it a respected place among British softskin vehicles of the war, and its chassis was later adapted for the Humber Light Reconnaissance Car
