Description
The Indian Pattern Armoured Car was a series of improvised yet effective armoured vehicles produced in British India during the Second World War. Built largely on Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck chassis, these cars were designed to meet the urgent need for mobile reconnaissance and internal security vehicles at a time when British and Commonwealth forces in the region faced equipment shortages. Their construction used locally available steel plate and simple, angular armour layouts, giving them a distinctive, box‑like appearance.
These armoured cars served widely across India, Burma, Malaya, and the Middle East, performing roles such as convoy escort, patrol work, airfield defence, and reconnaissance. Although not intended to fight heavily armoured opponents, they were valued for their reliability, ease of maintenance, and suitability for rough terrain. Armament typically consisted of a Bren light machine gun or Vickers gun, mounted in an open or lightly armoured turret, providing adequate firepower against infantry and light vehicles.
The Indian Pattern Armoured Car played a particularly important role during the Burma campaign, where its mobility and simplicity proved well suited to jungle tracks and long‑distance patrols. While never as sophisticated as purpose‑built British or American armoured cars, it filled a critical gap and contributed significantly to Commonwealth operations in the Asian theatre.

Tony Doubleday (verified owner) –
Bought two of these in 20mm and am impressed. The detailing is crisp and paints up well. The assembly is simple with minimal cleaning. There is the option for s frontal boys ATR or bren gun. The detail of these weapons within the crew compartment is not there, but that won’t show after I add crew figures as I intend.
