Formed in 1940, The LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) was recon and raiding force of the British Army during World War II. More often engaged in long range intelligence gathering missions and recon patrols, the LRDG still saw combat with their most famous action being during Operation Caravan.
A favoured vehicle of the LRDG was 30cwt Chevrolet. A modified two wheel drive (preferred as 2WD uses less fuel than 4WD and so increases patrol range) civilian truck, the Chevy 30cwt was the principle vehicle of the LRDG between 1940-1943. In order to keep weight down and speed and fuel efficiency up, all non essential parts were removed including doors, windscreens etc.
Additional equipment was added to suit the role such as sand tracks, bigger radiators, low pressure tyres, maps and a sun compass. Weapons could vary greatly but included .50 caliber Browning, Vickers K and .303 Browning MKII’s (in single or twin mounts), Maxim and Vickers MMGs, and the Breda 20mm M35 and Bofors 37mm dual purpose (rear facing and known as “the scorpion’s tail”).
Constantly being tweaked and added to, the LRDG trucks combined a massive amount of firepower into a small, unarmoured vehicle that could come roaring over a dune in the middle of the desert, destroy a small outpost or patrol and then disappear before the enemy knew what had happened.
