IS-2 Heavy Tank (Soviet)

Description

The IS-2 (Iosif Stalin 2) was a Soviet heavy tank developed during World War II to counter German heavy armour, particularly the Tiger and Panther tanks. Introduced in 1944, it was a significant evolution from earlier KV-series tanks, combining formidable firepower, improved armour, and greater mobility. Its most notable feature was the powerful 122mm D-25T gun, capable of destroying German tanks at long range and demolishing fortified positions with high-explosive shells.

The IS-2 featured thick frontal armour—up to 120mm sloped—which provided excellent protection against German anti-tank weapons. Despite its heavy weight, it maintained reasonable mobility thanks to a 600-horsepower V-2-IS diesel engine. The tank had a five-man crew and a relatively low silhouette for a heavy tank, enhancing its battlefield survivability.

The IS-2 played a crucial role in the final offensives of the Eastern Front, including the Battle of Berlin, where it was used effectively in urban combat. Its combination of firepower and protection made it one of the most respected Allied tanks of the war. Post-war, the IS-2 remained in service for several years and influenced the design of later Soviet heavy tanks, such as the IS-3 and T-10.
