Description
Japanese barracks ranged from permanent military buildings to simple wooden huts erected beside airfields, ports and defensive positions. They housed soldiers and contained stores, offices, kitchens and equipment. On Pacific islands, barracks were frequently built from timber with corrugated metal or tiled roofs, making them vulnerable to bombing, naval gunfire and fire. By the time American troops captured many Japanese bases, only scorched foundations, collapsed beams and fragments of masonry remained. Such ruins offered limited cover but could conceal snipers, ammunition or booby traps.
