Laffly S15TOE (French)

Description

The Laffly S15TOE was a French armoured scout car developed in the mid-1930s for colonial service, particularly in North and West Africa. Based on the Laffly S15T artillery tractor chassis, the S15TOE (Théâtre d’Opérations Extérieures) was adapted for reconnaissance and patrol duties in rugged terrain. It retained the distinctive Laffly 6×6 configuration, including auxiliary rollers at the front and beneath the cab to aid trench and obstacle crossing.

The vehicle featured a lightly armoured body with up to 7mm steel plating, protecting the engine and crew compartment. A small hemispherical turret mounted a single 7.5mm Reibel MAC 31 machine gun, offering limited anti-infantry and anti-aircraft capability. The open rear cargo area could transport up to six infantrymen, making it a hybrid between an armoured car and personnel carrier.

Powered by a Peugeot petrol engine producing around 60 horsepower, the S15TOE could reach speeds of 60 km/h and had a range of approximately 1,000 km. A total of 45 units were produced, with 25 deployed in North Africa and 20 in West Africa. Though obsolete by 1942, the S15TOE served with French colonial forces and was later used by Italian troops in Tunisia. It remains a rare example of interwar colonial armoured vehicle design.
