The British Leyland Hippo was a heavy 6‑ton truck used extensively by the British Army for long‑distance transport. Its robust diesel engine and large cargo capacity made it ideal for moving supplies across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The Hippo’s strong suspension handled rough roads well, though its size limited manoeuvrability in tight urban areas. It frequently carried fuel, ammunition, and engineering stores, and some variants were adapted for tanker or recovery roles. Crews valued its reliability and endurance on extended convoys. The Leyland Hippo became a cornerstone of British wartime logistics, ensuring steady supply to advancing forces.
