Description

The Leyland Retriever was a 6×4 medium tactical truck produced by Leyland Motors for the British Army between 1939 and 1945. Designed for general utility, it featured a robust chassis and a 6-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine delivering around 73 horsepower.

With a payload capacity of approximately three tonnes, the Retriever was used extensively across all major theatres of war. Early models had open cabs with canvas covers, while later versions included metal doors and windscreens for improved crew protection. A notable variant was the Beaver-Eel, an armoured adaptation used by the RAF for airfield defence.

One of the most famous Retrievers served as Field Marshal Montgomery’s mobile headquarters, now preserved at the Imperial War Museum. In total, 6,542 units were built, and their reliability and versatility made them a key component of British wartime logistics.
