Description

The 50mm light mortar was a Soviet infantry weapon introduced in the late 1930s and widely used during the early years of the Second World War. Compact and portable, it was designed to provide close fire support for infantry units, delivering high‑explosive rounds against enemy positions, machine‑gun nests, and troops in cover.

Its effective range was around 800 metres, making it suitable for short‑range engagements but limited compared to heavier mortars. Polish forces aligned with the Soviet Union, particularly the Polish People’s Army formed in 1943, were equipped with 50mm mortars as part of their standard infantry armament.

These weapons were valued for their simplicity and ease of use, though their small calibre restricted destructive power. By 1943–44, the 50mm mortar was increasingly replaced by larger 82mm models, but it remained in service with Polish units during training and early combat operations, offering essential fire support at the squad level.
