LVT(A)-2 Buffalo (US)

Description

The LVT-2 Water Buffalo was an amphibious tracked transport widely used by American forces in the Pacific. Developed from earlier civilian swamp vehicles, it possessed improved suspension, stronger tracks and better performance both afloat and ashore. The open cargo compartment could carry troops, ammunition and supplies across coral reefs that prevented conventional landing craft from reaching beaches. Machine guns provided limited defensive fire, although the vehicle’s thin armour offered little protection from artillery or anti-tank weapons. LVT-2s played important roles during assaults in the Gilbert, Marshall and Mariana Islands. Their ability to cross water, sand and mud made them essential to American amphibious operations.
