LVT(A)-4 (US)

Description

The LVT(A)-4 was an amphibious fire-support vehicle used by American forces during later Pacific campaigns. It combined the tracked hull of an Landing Vehicle Tracked with the open-topped turret and short 75mm howitzer associated with the M8 motor carriage. This weapon fired a powerful high-explosive shell, making the vehicle effective against bunkers, trenches and concentrations of infantry. LVT(A)-4s accompanied assault waves across reefs and beaches, providing immediate artillery support before conventional tanks and guns could land. Their thin armour and open turrets exposed crews to enemy fire, while early models lacked machine guns. Even so, they proved valuable on Saipan, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
