M10 – Achilles (British)

Description

The M10 Achilles, officially known as the 17pdr SP Achilles, is a British variant of the American M10 tank destroyer. It was developed during World War II to enhance the anti-tank capabilities of the Allied forces. The Achilles was armed with the British Ordnance QF 17-pounder high-velocity 76.2 mm anti-tank gun, replacing the M10’s original 3-inch gun.

The M10 chassis, based on the M4 Sherman, featured thinner but more sloped armour to achieve higher speeds. The Achilles retained the M10’s open-topped turret, which provided better situational awareness for the crew but also made them more vulnerable to attacks from above. To improve protection, additional armor plates were welded onto the hull and turret.

A total of 1,100 M10s were converted to Achilles, making it the second most numerous armoured fighting vehicle to carry the 17-pounder gun, after the Sherman Firefly. The Achilles saw significant action from the Normandy invasion in 1944 onwards, proving effective against German tanks. Its ability to penetrate thick armour at long ranges made it a valuable asset on the battlefield.
