M19 Diamond T980 Tank transporter (US)

Description

The French Char 2C was a super-heavy tank that set several records in the history of armored warfare. Developed during World War I, it did not see combat until after the war ended. In terms of size, weight and firepower, it outmatched any contemporary tank.

The M19 Tank Transporter was a heavy-duty vehicle system used by the United States during the Second World War, comprising the Diamond T 980/981 12-ton 6×4 tractor and the 12-wheel M9 trailer.

Originally designed to meet British requirements under Lend-Lease, it was later adopted by the U.S. Army and standardised in 1942. Powered by a Hercules DFXE diesel engine producing 201 horsepower, the tractor featured a hard cab, ballast box, and a powerful winch rated up to 40,000 lbs.

The M19 was capable of hauling tanks and other heavy equipment up to 45 tons, making it vital for battlefield recovery and logistics. Though eventually superseded by the M25 Dragon Wagon, the M19 remained in service throughout the war and into the 1950s. Its rugged design and dependable performance made it a key asset in both European and Pacific theatres, supporting armoured operations and heavy vehicle transport across varied terrain.
