M4A3R3 Sherman – “Zippo” (US)

Description

The M4A3R3 Sherman, commonly called the Zippo, replaced its main gun with a powerful flamethrower for attacking Japanese fortifications. Fuel tanks and specialised equipment allowed it to project burning fuel into caves, bunkers and trenches from a safer distance than portable flamethrowers. Its armour protected the crew from small-arms fire, while supporting infantry and tanks guarded it against hidden anti-tank teams. Zippo Shermans proved particularly valuable on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where Japanese defenders occupied extensive underground positions. The weapon’s terrifying heat and smoke could force troops from cover or consume oxygen inside enclosed spaces. Limited fuel capacity required careful planning and frequent replenishment.
