Marmon Herrington CTLS-4TAС (Dutch)

Description

The Marmon-Herrington CTLS-4TAC was a light tank developed in the United States for export, primarily to the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL), during the early years of World War II. Based on the earlier CTL-6 chassis, the CTLS-4TAC featured bolted armour up to 25 mm thick, a vertical volute spring suspension, and a compact two-man crew layout. Its most distinctive feature was the offset turret mounted on the right side of the hull, allowing only 270° traverse due to space constraints.

Armament consisted of two .30 calibre Browning machine guns—one in the turret and one in the hull. Dutch models omitted the roof-mounted gun found on other variants. Powered by a 124 hp Hercules WXLC-3 engine, the tank reached speeds of up to 48 km/h and had a range of approximately 100 km. Though lacking a radio and advanced optics, it was valued for its simplicity and ease of maintenance.

Of the 200 ordered by the KNIL, only a handful reached the East Indies before the Japanese invasion. Others were diverted to Australia and Suriname, where they saw limited service.
