Description
The Vickers Utility Tractor VLC was a compact, tracked artillery tractor developed in the late 1920s by Vickers-Armstrong, derived from the earlier Dragon series and Carden-Loyd designs. Intended for towing light artillery, it featured a boxy hull, leaf-sprung bogies, and a 51 hp Meadows 4-cylinder petrol engine. Though unarmoured, it had folding armour panels to shield the driver and was capable of modest off-road performance.
In Dutch KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army) service, the VLC was ordered in two batches—20 units in October 1939 and 30 more in December—from Belgian manufacturer Familleureux. The KNIL variant was modified with fold-down side panels, creating three outward-facing seats per side for the gun crew, with the panels doubling as footrests. These tractors were used primarily to tow 47 mm Böhler anti-tank guns, supporting mobile defence units in Java.
The first batch arrived in April 1940 and was assigned to the 2nd Armoured and Anti-Aircraft Section (2 APLA) of the 2nd Infantry Regiment in West Java. Despite their limited speed and protection, VLCs provided vital mobility in jungle terrain. After the Japanese invasion in 1942, surviving units were either destroyed, captured, or repurposed.
