Matilda CDL (British)

Description

The Matilda CDL was a Canal Defence Light variant of the Matilda II infantry tank, replacing its turret with a powerful searchlight system. Designed for night operations, the CDL could illuminate battlefields, blind enemy troops, and support river crossings. The Matilda’s thick armour made it well‑suited to operating close to enemy positions, though its slow speed limited mobility. The CDL concept remained secretive and saw limited use, but it proved effective in specialised operations.
