Morris CDSW (British)

Description

The Morris CDSW was a six-wheeled artillery tractor used by the British Army during the Second World War. Introduced in the mid-1930s, it was designed to tow field guns such as the 18-pounder, 4.5-inch howitzer, and later the 25-pounder gun-howitzer. The designation CDSW stood for model C, Double rear axle (D), Six-cylinder engine (S), and Winch (W).

Powered by a 3.5-litre petrol engine, it offered reliable performance for towing heavy artillery across varied terrain. A modified version was also used to haul 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft guns in Light Anti-Aircraft regiments. Another variant featured a crane for breakdown and recovery duties.

Although widely used in the early war years, many CDSWs were lost during the Dunkirk evacuation and were gradually replaced by the more modern Morris C8 “Quad.” Nonetheless, the CDSW played a vital role in British artillery mobility during the early stages of the war
