Description
The Panzer III Ausf. D, developed in 1938, was an early variant of Germany’s Panzer III series of medium tanks. It featured several design improvements over its predecessors, such as a revised suspension system with four large road wheels per side. This was an experimental configuration, intended to enhance mobility and durability. Like earlier models, the Ausf. D was armed with a 37mm KwK 36 L/45 gun and two MG 34 machine guns. Its armour ranged from 14.5mm to 30mm, offering slightly better protection compared to the Ausf. C variant.
The Panzer III Ausf. D saw very limited production, with only 30 units manufactured. It primarily served as a testbed for evaluating technical changes rather than as a frontline combat vehicle. The lessons learned from this model contributed to the refinement of subsequent Panzer III designs, leading to more effective variants suited for mass production and combat.
Although the Ausf. D itself was not widely deployed in warfare, its development marked another step forward in Germany’s pursuit of creating an efficient and versatile medium tank. It helped pave the way for the later Panzer III variants that played a significant role in Germany’s armoured forces during World War II.
