Description
The Panzer III Ausf. M Flammpanzer was a flamethrower-equipped variant of the Panzer III, introduced during the Second World War to meet the Wehrmacht’s need for specialised vehicles in assault operations. Based on the Ausf. M chassis, this version replaced the conventional main gun with a flamethrower, designated as the Flammenwerfer 41. The flamethrower offered a range of approximately 60 metres, making it effective in close combat situations such as clearing fortified positions, trenches, or urban environments.
To accommodate the flamethrower, the tank carried a pressurised fuel system capable of storing 1,000 litres of flammable liquid. This system was well-protected within the hull to minimise vulnerabilities. Secondary armament consisted of a coaxial MG 34 machine gun for use against infantry and light vehicles. The tank retained the torsion-bar suspension system and Maybach HL 120 TRM engine, ensuring reliable mobility across varied terrains.
The Panzer III Ausf. M Flammpanzer was heavily armoured, with frontal armour reaching 50mm, supplemented by additional appliqué plates.  Despite its effectiveness in its intended role, the Flammpanzer was produced in limited numbers and saw service primarily on the Eastern Front, where it faced significant operational challenges.
