Description
The Light Tank Panzerjäger 35R was a German improvised tank destroyer, created by modifying captured French Renault R35 light tanks. After the fall of France in 1940, the Wehrmacht repurposed many R35s, which were otherwise obsolete for frontline use due to their limited speed, armour, and firepower. To extend their utility, some were converted into self-propelled anti-tank platforms.
In this variant, the original turret was removed and replaced with a fixed superstructure mounting a German anti-tank gun—typically a 4.7cm Pak(t), derived from captured Czech weaponry. This gave the vehicle a modest capability against lightly armoured targets, suitable for rear-area defence, anti-partisan operations, or use in occupied territories.
The Panzerjäger 35R retained the R35’s basic chassis and mobility, but its combat effectiveness was limited by thin armour and poor off-road performance.
