Description
The Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.B mit 7.5cm StuK 40, also known as Panzerjäger I B, was an extreme example of German battlefield improvisation. Based on the obsolete Panzer I Ausf.B light tank chassis, this conversion involved mounting the powerful 7.5cm StuK 40 gun—normally fitted to the StuG III assault gun—onto a drastically modified superstructure. The result was a compact but heavily armed tank destroyer, albeit with significant limitations.
The Panzer I chassis was never designed to handle such a large weapon, leading to cramped crew conditions, poor stability, and limited ammunition stowage. Armour protection remained minimal, and the open-topped fighting compartment left the crew vulnerable to small arms and shrapnel. Nevertheless, the StuK 40 offered formidable anti-tank capability, capable of defeating most Allied armour at medium ranges.
