Renault 36R TRC (French)

Description

The Renault 36R, officially designated TRC 36R (Tracteur de Ravitaillement pour Chars), was a French tracked supply tractor developed in the mid-1930s to support armoured units. Designed as a replacement for the Citroën-Kégresse P17, it was intended to transport fuel, ammunition, and maintenance equipment to frontline tanks. Based on the Renault UE chassis, the 36R featured a 2.1L four-cylinder petrol engine producing 38 horsepower, enabling a top speed of 35 km/h, though this dropped to 28 km/h when towing a trailer.

The vehicle had a two-man crew and a payload capacity of 822 kg on its flatbed, typically loaded with tank shells and small arms ammunition. It was paired with the UKR trailer, capable of carrying 450 litres of fuel and additional supplies, bringing the total useful load to around 1.4 tonnes. Despite its full-track configuration offering good off-road performance, the 36R was underpowered and lacked armour.

Production began in 1938, with 260 units completed by early 1940. Although not included in France’s wartime rearmament programme, it was deployed across tank battalions. Many were captured and reused by German forces as the Vollkettenschlepper Renault 36R. Today, a handful survive, including a working example at the Saumur Tank Museum.
