Renault R35 light tank (French)

Description

The Renault R35 was a French light infantry tank, primarily used during World War II. Designed as an infantry support vehicle, it was one of the most massively produced tanks of its time, with over 1,600 units manufactured between 1936 and 1940.

The R35 was known for its robust armour, which was quite thick relative to its size, and a short-barrelled 37mm main gun. Despite its sturdy build, the tank was criticized for its slow speed and limited firepower, which made it less effective in fast-paced warfare. The R35’s design was based on its predecessor, the Renault FT, with improvements in armour and armament.

It was also used by other countries and underwent several modifications, including upgunning by the Lebanese Army post-1945. The R35 marks an important phase in tank development, representing the shift from interwar period designs to more modern armored warfare tactics.
