Description
During World War II, the British Special Air Service (SAS) heavily modified Jeeps for their operations in the North African desert. These vehicles were stripped of all non-essential parts to reduce weight and increase manoeuvrability in the harsh desert terrain. They were equipped with extra fuel, water, ammunition, and personal supplies, transforming them into self-contained mobile bases capable of long-range missions behind enemy lines.
The modifications included larger radiators and condensers to prevent engine overheating, and the vehicles were armed with a variety of weapons, including Browning machine guns, to provide firepower during raids. The SAS’s innovative use of these Jeeps set a precedent for special forces vehicles, emphasizing adaptability, endurance, and firepower.
These Jeeps were crucial in the success of the SAS’s hit-and-run tactics, allowing them to strike quickly and vanish into the desert, disrupting enemy supply lines and communications. A prime example of this was when on the night of 26-27th July 1942, 18 jeeps of the SAS tore through the Sidi Haneish airfield and destroyed around 40 aircraft for the loss of only a single jeep and a single soldier – Lance Bombardier John Robson.
Future attacks, either on their own or in conjunction with the LRDG, earned the SAS a deadly reputation, and one that would not have been possible without their dangerously overloaded jeeps!
The legacy of these customised Jeeps continued post-war, influencing the design of military vehicles for decades to come.
